Eugene Peterson said, 'We live in a narrative, we live in a story. We have a beginning and an end, we have a plot, we have character.' Story is the language of the heart. Our souls speak not in the naked facts of mathematics or the abstract propositions of systematic theology; they speak the images and emotions of story."(1)
"your life could be the very poetry of God."
"Our wealth—time, treasure, and talent—can be used for the sort of profit that is more than just individual, capital gain."
"make yourselves purses which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure where no thief comes near nor moth destroys."
"In other words, wealth creates profit, but the kind of profit our treasure creates is up to us to decide. And where our wealth is, there will our hearts be also."

it has been a long time since i've thought. when i was younger and had no one to talk to i'd day dream up conversations and ideas. now even when i walk it seems i am late for something, perhaps sleep. instead of dreaming up other galaxies i want to do something like visit adler planeterium hope to squeeze out a bit of life, but often i am too tired for that. of course that is a lie. not so much how i am, but how i feel at the moment. but i am happy.
and i have forgotten how to read. non-law school related reading but ideas of something beyond human-created rules. like law, like football. so i have very little to say and have forgotten how to think. so maybe i'll start slow and paste down a few things i read.
"I see the moon, almost full, rising, framed by the window casing, and surprisingly exotic. Looking at her reminds me of ways of being that are so much older than our own, so much older than our ways of the daily worrying we so persistently repeat to make those circles on our carpets."- the dean. rising beyond circles in rugs... even as i try to read my mind can only manage jump to from phrases to phrases or rather spasming from images to images like a skipping soundtrack only it's a vividly colored yet rackety silent movie. i have been taught too well how to skim that i can't stop even when i want to:
" The French have a word, depaysement... "the feeling of not being assaulted by the familiarity of things." ...some new sense of the old. I am puzzled..."fantastical, but is as real as I am, standing with a cup of tea. You may also experience that slight sense of the strangeness of seeing the familiar at a place called "here" and a time called "now." ..."some exotic place, the strange as well as the familiar are here and now.,,the frame differs: suddenly in a new country without luggage... And I do not know what all this means, even as I write it." Me neither, me neither.
----
"Later I also began to note how people ate, and where. My brother liked fancy food in fine surroundings, my father only cared about the coupons; and Mom would eat anything so long as the location was exotic. I was slowly discovering that if you watched people as they ate, you could find out who they were." Goal of the week is to see people through food.
"When in doubt, ascribe all quotations to George Bernard Shaw" - Nigel rees, from the alumni magazine.
